Investments for storage in India#180

V

India have seen a great development for renewable energy last few years and last year they manage to reach 50% renewables counting installed GW, something there national goal was for 2030. That they manage that five years in advance is really fantastic.

The problem for India now is that they can’t use all there solar power because of lack in the grid and flexibility in usage. As they need to keep coal plants running through the day to meet the demand during the evening some solar power are forced to close down mid day.

Therefor I would suggest that you look for an partner not to deploy more solar but instead storage to support the already growing solar in India. Not only would more storage lead to more use of renewables during the evening, it would also close down coal plants completely during the day and therefore increase renewables share even more.

I agree. We are quite interested and BESS/battery storage is definitely on our list and not just for India, but for other countries as well.

Storage is THE key to support all that solar growth and finally moving away from coal during peak hours. Solar progress is impressive in a lot of countries including Vietnam and India, but the grid needs that flexibility now to actually use the power being generated. We see a huge opportunity in battery storage to bridge that gap actually.

We are always looking for partners, in fact we have evaluated a few in past, though project economics and risk level doesn’t always make sense. Nonetheless, we will continue hunting.
Keep sharing such insights, Cheers!

I fully understand, I have seen that in the Stride projects is use to includes some storage but I’m a bit surprised over the small size. For a 750 kW solar park a 30 kWh battery fells small. I mean, in optimal conditions the solar system can fill up the storage in less then three minutes.

For now Vietnam have some hydro power that they can use to flex for the solar power but l if the solar continue to increase the batteries will need to be bigger in comparison to the solar system. But I guess then the battery prices continue to fall this will be a natural development.
